Since 24 August 2026, ChatGPT has been showing ads in Belgium, as in 30 other European markets. Self-service access to ChatGPT Ads was announced for these markets in late August, but placement is for now largely organised through major media agencies. For a Belgian SME, the real question is not how to buy a slot: it is whether your business gets cited when a customer asks ChatGPT.
1. What changed on 24 August 2026
OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Ads to 31 European markets, Belgium included, six months after a first pilot in the United States. Ads appear below the answer, in a slot labelled as sponsored. Only the Free and Go tiers show ads: Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu subscriptions stay ad-free. In Europe, OpenAI states it does not use conversation history or memory to personalise ads without the user's consent.
2. A channel still locked for most SMEs
Self-service access through Ads Manager was announced for all 31 markets from 31 August 2026. In practice, ad placement is still largely organised through major agency groups (Publicis, WPP, Omnicom, MediaPlus, Havas, dentsu), which for now favours national and international budgets over local shops. For a Belgian SME with a limited budget, this new channel is therefore not, at this stage, an immediately available lever.
3. Why being cited often matters more than a paid slot
An ad is a purchased space, labelled as such, that disappears with the budget. A citation is different: it appears directly in the body of the answer, because the model picked up information that exists, is accurate, and is accessible where it looks for it. Nobody buys it, and it is what the user reads first, ahead of the sponsored slot.
4. The three-minute test
Type, into ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot, the question a customer would ask, not your company name, but their need (for example « digital marketing agency Brussels »). Look at which sources get cited in the answer. If your business appears nowhere, the problem is not advertising: the information does not yet exist in a form these models can pick up.
The AI lens, humans first
An AI assistant can run these queries at scale, flag pages missing structured information, and spot inconsistencies between your site and your Google Business Profile. But AI executes this monitoring, it does not decide the strategy. Choosing between an ad budget and consolidating your organic presence remains an expert's call. AI executes. Expertise decides, and watches.
This week
Test three typical customer questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. Note whether your business gets cited. Fix outdated information on your site and your Google Business Profile first.
With Vistalaro Pilot, your dedicated marketer structures your content so it stays a reliable, citable source, on Google as much as in AI assistants. With Vistalaro Reach, we also track the gradual opening of ChatGPT Ads, ready to switch it on once it makes sense for your budget, without chasing a channel still reserved for large accounts.
