Since 30 September 2026, SEO professionals have reported that signing into a Google account is now required to read all reviews on a Google Maps listing, sort them, or leave a new one, according to Search Engine Roundtable. Google has given no official explanation. For a Belgian business, the effect is concrete: a rushed visitor who is not signed in sees fewer reviews, and the ones shown by default carry more weight in their decision.
1. A change that was spotted, not announced
From 30 September 2026, several users reported on X and LinkedIn that a Google Maps listing now prompts a sign-in request as soon as someone tries to read every review, sort them by rating or date, or post a new one. The finding was reported by Search Engine Roundtable, which notes that Google has published no announcement or official justification.
A similar signal had already appeared in February 2026: logged-out users had noticed a limited display that removed reviews, photos and the busyness indicator, according to MacGeneration. The difference at the end of September is the scope of the restriction, which now also covers sorting and posting reviews, not just reading them.
2. What actually changes on a business listing
Without signing in, a visitor now sees only a limited number of reviews at the top of a listing, shown in an order they can no longer change. For a business, this means the handful of reviews visible by default, and the replies attached to them, carry more weight in the impression left on a rushed customer, according to the analysis relayed by info-lux.com.
RelevantAudience nonetheless urges caution: Google has confirmed neither the scale of the rollout nor which countries are affected. A Belgian business is therefore left uncertain about the exact scope of the change, even though the effect is already real for logged-out visitors.
3. Why it matters for Belgian businesses
A Google Business Profile is often the first thing a customer checks before contacting a local business, whether a shop, a practice or a service provider. If part of the reviews become less visible to logged-out visitors, the handful shown without sign-in effectively become the business's default shop window.
For a Belgian SME, the task is no longer just about collecting reviews over time. It is about making sure the ones shown without sign-in stay recent, positive, and backed by a professional reply.
4. What businesses can check this week
RelevantAudience recommends checking your own listing while signed out of any Google account, testing the review sorting options, and comparing the number of publicly visible reviews with the count shown on your Google Business Profile dashboard.
These checks do not replace a full local SEO audit, but they let a Belgian business measure, this week, what a prospective customer actually sees before getting in touch.
The AI lens, humans first
An AI agent can continuously monitor how a Google Business Profile displays, both for signed-in and signed-out visitors, and flag any gap in the number or order of reviews shown. It can also draft a reply to the most visible reviews. Choosing the tone of a reply to a negative review, deciding which reviews to highlight in communications, and checking that no automated reply upsets a customer, remains a human decision. AI executes. Expertise decides, and keeps watch.
This week
Check your Google Business Profile in a private browser window, signed out of any account, to see what a prospective customer actually finds. Compare the number of reviews shown with the count on your dashboard, and reply first to the reviews visible by default. Keep asking satisfied customers for reviews on a regular basis, rather than in bursts.
Vistalaro Pulse monitors your Google reviews and how your listing displays depending on whether a visitor is signed in, so your reputation stays visible at the right moment. Vistalaro Pilot folds these Google changes into your local SEO strategy, to decide what needs adjusting and what can be left alone.
Do you know what a customer sees on your Google listing when they are not signed in?
Most Belgian businesses have never checked, and that is exactly what matters now.
