OpenAI had hinted at it back in July, in our previous Signal. It is now official: advertising arrives inside ChatGPT in Belgium from Monday 24 August 2026. Here is what is confirmed, and how to approach this new channel without rushing.
What is confirmed
OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT Ads in 31 European countries, including Belgium, starting 24 August 2026. The launch follows a six-month test phase that began in the United States and later expanded to eight other markets. Ads will only appear for users on the "Free" and "Go" entry-level plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise plans remain ad-free. OpenAI's stated goal: fund free access to advanced AI for as many people as possible, much as Google and Meta did before it.
How advertisers get access
For now, access to the advertising platform runs through partner agencies, including Publicis, WPP, Omnicom, Havas and Dentsu, or directly via the OpenAI Ads Solutions team. A self-service management tool, closer to what Google Ads or Meta Ads Manager already offer, is expected later this year. On the measurement side, OpenAI is rolling out a Conversions API, a tracking pixel, and targeting by custom audiences and geography: building blocks already familiar to anyone running Google or Meta campaigns.
The guardrails announced
OpenAI stresses three points. Ads are clearly labelled and kept separate from AI-generated answers. They do not influence the content of those answers. Advertisers have no access to user conversations, and users keep control over how their data is used for ad personalisation. It remains to be seen, in practice and as campaign volume grows, how well these principles hold up over time.
What it means for a Belgian SME
A new advertising channel opening up is not a reason to jump in headfirst. Audiences there are still limited, formats are evolving fast, and performance benchmarks (cost per click, conversion rate) still lack the track record needed to judge relevance. For an SME, the right approach is to watch it closely, without diverting budget already invested in channels that have proven themselves: Google, Meta or LinkedIn depending on the sector.
The AI lens, humans first
This launch illustrates our position well. A conversational AI can now display advertising, but deciding whether to invest a budget in it, adjusting a media mix, or waiting for the channel to mature remains a strategic choice. AI executes a campaign once the direction is set. Expertise decides, and keeps watch on what comes next.
This week
Review your current advertising mix before considering a new channel. Check whether your target audience uses the free or Go version of ChatGPT. Keep an eye out for the self-service tool OpenAI has announced for later this year.
At Vistalaro, a new advertising channel opening up does not change our method: we test before we recommend. Our team (Vistalaro Reach) continuously evaluates the paid channels relevant to your sector, while the overall strategy (Vistalaro Pilot) determines the right time, and the right budget, to venture there.
